Agencies get money for big IT projects

There's billions in the 2009 American Recovery and Investment Act and plenty of it heading directly to federal agencies to improve information technology systems in the federal government. NextGov.com reports that the dollars include funding for these projects:

  • $50 million for systems for the Veterans Benefits Administration.
  • $300 million to fund regional health information networks to enhance the Nationwide Health Information Network.
  • $85 million for infrastructure development of the Indian Health Service IT system.

That's just the tip of the iceberg. It's clear that federal agencies will need more staff to get these projects underway and make sure they are completed, not to mention direct oversight to make sure the funds are spent smartly.
