Acting White House cyberczar quits
Melissa E. Hathaway, the acting White House cyberczar who had the job (but didn't really), resigned on Monday. She said she didn't want to wait any longer for what has become an arduous process of selected the candidate for the job. She was a contender for the position, but in recent weeks other names have been floated for the job.
"I wasn't willing to continue to wait any longer, because I'm not empowered right now to continue to drive the change," she told the Washington Post. "I've concluded that I can do more now from a different role," most likely in the private sector.
The newspaper quoted an unnamed colleague of Hathaway's as saying that she had been upset by the delay in making the appointment. Hathaway had "the sense that this was very political, that she has been too closely tied to the Bush administration."
There has been plenty of frustration both inside and outside the government over the delay in filling this job. The newspaper quoted one source who said that 30 people had been interviewed for it.
Hathaway's resignation may, in fact, mean that the White House has its candidate and is simply waiting for a background check to be completed. Or it could mean that, for whatever reason, the Obama administration is dragging its feet.
