Four agencies flunk stimulus reporting

The Departments of Agriculture, Defense and Homeland Security, as well as the Small Business Administration gave out plenty of stimulus money, but failed to monitor data quality for economic stimulus reporting requirements.

A report, released by the Health and Human Services Department's Office of Inspector General (OIG) summarizes the findings of 21 separate reports from federal agency IGs about reporting errors and omissions.

The Recovery Act requires agencies to ensure transparency and accountability by tracking money and how the recipients spend it. USDA, DOD, DHS and SBA already have taken some steps to ensure that funding recipients complied with the rules. Still, there are several gaps remaining, according to the report.
