DoD aims for self-reliance with SPIDERS microgrid

Declaring that today's electrical grid is unacceptably at high risk of extended outages, the Defense Department is spearheading a $30 million effort to prove it can cobble together a host of traditional and renewable sources into a smart microgrid capable of powering an military installation for an extended period of time. DoD moving toward secure microgrid

A year-long study commissioned by the Defense Department examined the potential of using solar power on seven military bases in California and two in Nevada. Most of the nine bases consisted of undeveloped ranges used for training and other military activities that the study found were incompatible with solar facilities. Using detailed Geographic Information System (GIS) data also ruled out some of the bases' developed areas because of the presence of cultural and biological resources, flash flood hazards and other conflicts. DOE offers guidance for cybersecurity maturity, risk assessment

Perhaps the most comprehensive cybersecurity guidance to come out of the Energy Department thus far is the Electricity Subsector Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model (.pdf) the DOE published May 31. The 92-page document streamlines other cybersecurity guidance for the energy sector into a common guide spanning 10 domains including risk management, identity and access management, situational awareness, and information sharing and communications.
