The early estimate of the total cost of Hurricane Sandy places it second among U.S. hurricanes in the last 20 years, between hurricanes Katrina and Andrew, even when adjusting for inflation

The equation that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration uses to calculate the cost of hurricanes is based on estimates of insured losses from the Property Claim Service or the American Insurance Institute, as well as flood losses from the National Flood Insurance Program. The methodology has evolved over time, though.
