Today, the Obama Administration unveiled its revamped USA.gov site featuring innovative new applications for mobile devices never before provided by the U.S. Government. This change is part of the Administration's commitment to making government more open and responsive to the wants and needs of the public.

As part of this effort, OMB is working to close the significant IT gap that has developed over the past decade and a half between the public and private sectors, contributing to the productivity divide between the two. Closing the IT gap is key to boosting efficiency and improving the delivery of services.

These new online tools are just the next step in a series of changes the Administration is undergoing to modernize the federal government and make it more responsive.

Innovative New "Apps" for Mobile Devices: Featuring Four for the Fourth!

More and more Americans are using their mobile devices to make their lives more convenient and get the information they need when they need it. The new Mobile Apps Store at USA.gov will collect all in one place the mobile applications developed throughout the federal government. Today, we're rolling out several of the many apps that will be available to the public at the expanding Mobile Apps Store.

As we head into Independence Day weekend, the Apps Store is featuring four apps for the Fourth - applications that can help Americans over the holiday weekend. These include:

  • An app for quick access to nutrition information for over 1,000 foods;
  • An app that provides around-the-clock access to frequently-requested airline information from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) including wait times at airport security lines;
  • An app for checking the UV Index and air quality ratings from anywhere in the world;
  • And an app that provides instant information on consumer safety recalls of toys, food, and more.

The apps currently available on USA.gov are free and most are compatible with iPhone, Blackberry, and Droid devices.

These and many other apps provided by the government will be available on Thursday, July 1st at www.usa.gov.

USA.gov

USA.gov is an online resource for the public to access information about taxes, school loans, elections, consumer protections and countless other topics. The updated site will continue to provide all of these services in a more user-friendly format and with new interactive features. Previously, this site was organized around the way government is run - not the way the public seeks information online. The revamped site has been fundamentally restructured to put frequently-requested information and vital resources only a click away. It utilizes cutting-edge web search technology to aggregate information that the public would have previously had to search for on numerous disparate sites. For instance, a family that relocates to a new state can access the information they need to change their postal address, find their new voting location, and update their driver's license - all from this site. The revamped USA.gov maximizes private sector innovations to provide the public with the cutting edge online features they have come to expect.
