Supports FISMA, Data Breach and Cloud Overhaul

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The President recently released his plans for comprehensive cybersecurity reforms across federal agencies and networks. As an organization representing the IT community, CompTIA is deeply vested in the security of IT networks and supports national cybersecurity reforms that keep the country safe against cyber threats. The following statement can be attributed to Todd Thibodeaux, president and chief executive officer of CompTIA.

“CompTIA commends the Obama Administration for developing a comprehensive cybersecurity reform proposal that improves the ability of the IT industry and federal government to respond to, coordinate and plan against cybersecurity threats.

“Specifically, CompTIA supports provisions within the cybersecurity proposal that call for a national data breach law that preempts states from maintaining the current patchwork of disparate and sometimes conflicting data breach notice requirements. Similarly, CompTIA supports the provisions that preempt state laws from imposing location-based restrictions on data centers, such as cloud providers. These provisions will ensure that our networks are secure and prepared for 21st century cyber attacks.

“CompTIA also supports the proposal to reform the Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA). FISMA played an important role early on in the fight against cyber attacks, but as cybersecurity threats have increased and grown more sophisticated over the past several years, FISMA has lagged behind. Reforming FISMA will improve the federal government’s ability to protect infrastructures that are so vital to our national security and economy.

“We believe the Administration’s proposal to reform cybersecurity is off to a strong start and will continue to review provisions as they are developed. We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress on behalf of the IT industry to share the perspective of our members.
