CEA Commends House for Passage of Incentive Spectrum Auction Legislation
Senate Should Act Now
ARLINGTON, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® applauded Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and the U.S. House of Representatives for including incentive spectrum auction legislation in the Middle Class Tax Cut Act of 2011, which passed in the House yesterday.
CEA has long advocated for the passage of legislation that authorizes the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to hold voluntary incentive spectrum auctions. The Jumpstarting Opportunity with Broadband Spectrum (JOBS) Act of 2011 grants this authority to the FCC while ensuring that $15 billion of the proceeds of the auction are directed toward deficit reduction.
“CEA commends Speaker Boehner and House Leadership for including voluntary spectrum auctions in the Middle Class Tax Cut Act of 2011,” said CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. “While the spectrum provision is but one piece of a larger legislative package now being sent to the Senate for consideration, we believe that it is critical in the beginning to address the looming shortage of wireless broadband capability. It’s also important that this bill include provisions for both licensed and unlicensed spectrum use, as both are essential to advancing innovation in America.”
