Business Roundtable Statement on June Unemployment Figures

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- “The June increase in the already stubbornly high unemployment rate, now more than ever, is a clarion call to the Administration and Congress to enact policies that will drive job creation for American workers and their families. The trend for unemployment in this country is again on the rise and we need to do everything we can to change its direction. Our first priority is passing the pending free trade agreements (FTAs) with Colombia, Panama and South Korea. Passage of the South Korea FTA alone will create an estimated 70,000 American jobs, but failure to pass the agreement could cost nearly 400,000 U.S. jobs.

“The private sector is the driving force behind economic growth, and American businesses need policies that provide the confidence to invest and hire. As we look to the second half of 2011, Business Roundtable is committed to working with policymakers to create greater economic certainty through sound and balanced policies – including passing the three FTAs, clearing unnecessary regulatory barriers and moving toward a more globally competitive tax system – so we can put Americans back to work,” said Business Roundtable President John Engler.
