American Frozen Food Institute Commends USDA School Meal Standards
MCLEAN, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI) President and CEO Kraig R. Naasz today issued the following statement commending final school meal nutrition standards released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
“AFFI commends the U.S. Department of Agriculture for issuing new school meal nutrition standards that promote improved childhood nutrition and address concerns raised by school nutritionists and frozen food producers. We especially value our partnership with school nutritionists, and we’re proud of our role in helping them provide school children with the nutritious meals they need to fuel growing minds and bodies.
“USDA’s new standards encompass a number of important changes to school meals, including nearly doubling the amount of fruits and vegetables served to school children and aligning school menus with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Importantly, USDA’s standards provide school nutritionists and food suppliers with the ability to offer school children a wide variety of healthy, appealing and affordable food options.
“Having enthusiastically supported the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2011 that provided increased funding for federal school breakfast and lunch programs, AFFI looks forward to working with USDA and school nutritionists to implement these new standards and further enhance childhood nutrition.”
